A handful of Kansas City firms both large and small are partnering to advance smart home technologies.
JE Dunn Construction Group and Sunflower Development Group have led at $500,000 investment round in Kansas City-based Homebase, a tech firm building an IoT smart apartment and building platform for multi-family properties. Will Winkler of PSW Real Estate, Andrew Brain of Brain Family Development and John Meyer of Lemonly also joined in the round.
Homebase’s app allows tenants to not only pay rent and request maintenance, but also schedule services and tap a plethora of smart home technology that has emerged in recent years. Homebase also enables property managers to remotely manage vacant units’ lighting and thermostats to help with utility costs.
Homebase CEO Blake Miller said the funding adds credibility to the IoT firm as well as scale outside of Kansas City. He added it will also allow the firm to add new engineering and customer support staff.
“I’m really looking forward to improving our residents lifestyle through unique connected services offered via the Homebase platform,” Miller said. “We are a IoT smart home provider, but to me it’s not really about the “things,” like smart locks, as it is the type of experience we can deliver to our residents.
Since February, Homebase has been conducting beta testing of the platform with Marvel Properties in apartment communities around the Kansas City area. Homebase is also designing multiple smart communities concepts that are currently under construction in Kansas City and Austin, Texas, with planned delivery in the second half of 2017.

You know the feeling. Body aches, headache, fatigue. There’s no denying it: You’ve caught the flu.
Typically, when you’re sick, you’d simply let your boss know you’re taking the day off, and stay within the comfy confines of your bed watching bad movies. But it may feel like a different story when you’ve got a job interview scheduled.
The reality is, it isn’t. Here’s how to handle the situation with finesse and tact:
Stay. At. Home.
Although you may be tempted to drag yourself out of bed to meet the prospective employer out of concern that it looks unprofessional to cancel at the last minute, take my word for it that you should stay at home.
There are a small number of reasons when it’s acceptable to reschedule late in the game—and this is one of them.
Sure, it’s not an ideal situation since you’ll probably use a sick day from your current job that you could have used towards the interview, but you should put your health and the health of others first. By staying at home, you’re doing the interviewers a favor, by preventing spreading germs to them.
If that’s not enough to convince you, maybe this will: You won’t be at the top of your game if you go in under the weather, and could hurt your chances at getting the job.
Recruiters and hiring managers tend to get cancellations from time to time; don’t stress out and over think your situation by placing too much weight on it. Candidates have asked me if it makes the prospective employer pause, wondering if you’ll call out sick frequently as an employee. The answer is no—they’re busy professionals who typically take it at face value: You’re sick and you’re postponing the interview. That’s it. Plus, I’ve seen interviewers stay at home, too. During flu season, you may notice when you’re scheduled to meet with five interviewers, upon arrival you’re told one of the interviewers isn’t it. Touché!
Pick up the phone
Since you’re likely to be within 24 hours of the scheduled interview when you realize you’re sick, call—don’t email—the person who scheduled it. Explain the situation while expressing your enthusiasm to reschedule at least one week later.
If it goes to voicemail, leave a message like, “Hi Jackie, I have an interview scheduled with you tomorrow at 10 am. Unfortunately, I’m under the weather with the flu so I’m very interested in rescheduling a week or so from now when I’ll be healthier. Plus, I don’t want to get any of your interviewers sick. My number is…”
The week rule is key,People can spread the flu up to a day before they start feeling sick and up to seven days after.
Move on
While it may be tempting to overanalyze your situation, there’s no need to go there. When candidates occasionally called me at the last minute because they were sick, it didn’t alter my impression of their candidacy; and it didn’t tarnish their reputation or negatively impact their job interview. If anything, it was quite the contrary! They sent a positive message by clearly putting their health (and mine) first.
So, when your rescheduled interview date arrives, be thankful you did the wise thing by delaying it. You can briefly allude to it upon the start of the interview by thanking the person for his or her flexibility. Acknowledge it, sure—but then quickly move on. Focus on acing the interview now that you’re back to your healthy self.

Africa's powerful and influential women were honoured on Friday night at the African Union Diaspora Africa Forum Women in Excellence Awards.
It was a star studded event of current and former presidents and activists from the continent.
Amongst the living legends were struggle hero and mother of the nation Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
Women and Children's rights activists Graca Machel and Nana Rowlings, former first lady of Ghana, were among the other category of Women of Excellence.
Johnson-Sirleaf has called for transformation in the lives of girl children on the continent. Africa's first woman president is now serving a second term. Recently, she has had to deal with the deadly Ebola outbreak which put the continent's readiness to deal with major health crises under the microscope.
The Liberian President says Africa needs educated children and women who can be given an opportunity to lead. "I think we need to start with the girl child, make sure that all our young girls are in school, they are able to reach their full potential in education, but it also means we need to extend education to rural women - many of whom are illiterate but are farmers and feed the nation."
"Women empowerment means we need more women in leadership positions throughout the society and we must all work for that and we must promote the policies at home in our institutions and in our homes those measures that will enhance the participation of women," she says.
Former Malawian president Joyce Banda has opened her foundation's headquarters in South Africa. Banda, who was defeated in the last election, took unprecedented steps to get rid of luxury perks for politicians.
However, she says it is her human rights work that she has been involved in over the last 30 years that she is proud of and intends to continue.
"In Malawi alone the Joyce Banda foundation has reached 1.2 million people because we have the market - women initiatives of about 500 000 people, youth programs, we sponsor orphans, girls in secondary schools students…we launched the Joyce Banda initiative which is headquartered here in South Africa."
She says now that she is no longer president she is even busier working in communities.
Chief Dorothy Chinyere Anyiam-Osigwe, an activist in Nigeria, was also a recipient of the Living Legend awards . She says following the death of her husband over 10 years ago, she decided to soldier on with his work to empower women.
African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, who was married to Kenya's liberation icon Jomo Kenyatta, and Ruth Sando Fahnbulleh Perry of Liberia were the other Living Legend recipients.
Machel was presented the Women of Excellence Award. The award, from the AU African Diaspora Forum, was presented to eight women in Sandton, Johannesburg.
She says it is important to recognise women's hard work. "This is a time to call for the revival of women's movement. This continent in the past was able to mobilise millions of women around freedom for all, freedom in our lifetime, but I don't see the same movement when we are faced with high rates of maternal mortality to say no this is unacceptable."
Machel has been given the award along with Rawlings. The former Ghana first lady says she ventured into activism when it was unknown for first ladies to assume this role. She says she has now turned to education.
“I am really happy that the recognition has come because you can work every day and you are not recognised but when you are recognised it gives you more impetus. I used to mobilise women more, now I am educating them more."
Other women of excellence are Zimbabwean born Dr Arikana Chihimbori, Dr Juliette Tuakli of Ghana, Dr Saida Agrebi of Tunisia, Justice Victoria Okobi of Nigeria, Nardos Bekele-Thomas of Ethiopia and Salma Salifu who was born and educated in Ghana.
Struggle veteran, Madikizela-Mandela says South Africa is not a xenophobic country. Accepting her Living Legends award presented by the AU African Diaspora Forum, Madikizela-Mandela said it was important for other African countries to get this message.
Another wave of xenophobic attacks grappled South Africa recently.
Meanwhile, Dlamini-Zuma has thanked her women mentors for her success. She was receiving a Living Legends Award from the African Union Diaspora Africa Forum. Dlamini-Zuma has dedicated the award to the women who are trying to make life better.
