Technology’s role in sustainable fashion

We talk so much about the people aspect of ethical fashion. We talk about the artisans and the factory workers, the people who shop sustainably and the people who are just starting to learn more about the fashion revolution. And every great movement has started with people. But every great movement also needed technology to give it that extra push.

For more about the technology we use to ensure our materials are sustainable and ethically made, check out our dyeing process and learn more about our organic and natural fibers. Want to use technology to learn about the artisan who made your Indigenous clothing? Learn about our Fair Trace Tool.

The Finishing and Dye Process

yarn colored with low impact dyesIndigenous works hard to ensure that dyes that create our beautiful color palette and complement our natural fibers do not harm the planet. Our low-impact dyeing programs intend to eliminate harmful chemicals and waste, providing innumerable environmental and health benefits.

We make conscious decisions about the chemicals and substances we will use in the processing and dyeing stages of production.  Indigenous will not use processes or dyes that we feel will harm the planet, even if they are in mainstream use by the textile industry and available at a much cheaper cost.

The yarns and dyeing processes used by Indigenous are created within the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) and the parameters of the Oeko-Tex Standard 100.   Adhering to these standards assures you that when you wear Indigenous clothes, you are wearing high fashion clothes that are made through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing processes for apparel made of properly handled organic materials.

As standards continue to evolve, we will continue to be active participants in numerous organic trade associations and certifying groups.  Indigenous is a recognized innovator and supporter of advancing legitimate, credible standards and accountability in organic and environmentally friendly production.

Indigenous excludes all of the following that we consider environmentally toxic:

  • Aromatic solvents
  • ChlorophenolsAll APEOs (i.e. nonylphenol, octylphenol, APEO-polymers)
  • Fluorocarbons (such as PFOS and PFOA)
  • Formaldehyde and other short-chain aldehydes
  • Genetically modified organisms of any sort (GMOs)
    Halogenated solvents
  • Heavy metals (except iron and low salt )
  • Plasticizers such as PAH, phthalates, bisphenol
  • Azo dyes and pigments that release carcinogenic arylamine
